About the Workshop:

Poetry Without Borders serves as an introduction to both old school and modern forms of poetry, as workshop participants practice building a modest portfolio around form structure but with an eye towards "breaking the rules" as well, so newly written works maintain a creative and autonomous edge, while still being accessible. Open to all poetry genres including narrative, lyric, langpo and experimental.

About the Instructor:

Paul Corman-Roberts has coached many successful poets to publication, from chapbooks to singular poems to full-length collections. He is the author of four chapbooks and two full-length collections of prose poetry, including Bone Moon Palace from Nomadic Press in 2020. He is a four-time nominee for Pushcart, Best of the Web, and Northern California Book Award. He is an MA/MFA Graduate of the New College of California Poetics program where he studied with David Meltzer, Genny Lim, and Neeli Cherkovski. In addition to teaching at SF Creative Writing Institute, he also teaches workshops for the Older Writer’s Lab at the San Francisco Public Library and works in the Oakland Unified School District. He is a founder of the Beast Crawl Literary Festival in Oakland, California.

The Countdown is on:

Poetry Without Borders is a workshop where you try classic forms, bend the rules, and write something that feels fresh. By the end, you’ll have a small portfolio of your own new poems.

Here are some good things about Paul:

Paul’s Poetry workshop was a game-changer. He helped me discover the thread in my poems, arrange them thematically, and even suggested the title for my chapbook. That manuscript became my first published collection — and since then I’ve gone on to publish more poetry and books. My publishing journey began with Paul.”
Kate McCarroll Moore. Winner of the 2023 Andrew Glaze Poetr
Paul helped me refine my style and gave me the confidence to share my work with live and online audiences. Since taking his class, my poems have been featured at readings and published in anthologies and chapbooks. My full collection, Four Crescents, came out in 2023, and another, Black Calculus came out in 2024."
Norm Mattox, Poet, retired educator, and author at Black Lawrence Press
Through Paul’s poetry courses, I learned how a poetry collection can ‘become.’ His prompts sparked new work, and his guidance showed me how to shape poems into a cohesive chapbook and prepare it for submission. That process led to my collection Cauldrons. I highly recommend this course to any writer ready to move toward publication.”
K.R. Morrison. Educator, poet, author of Cauldrons (PaperPress Books)

Please feel free to reply to this email if you are curious and want to learn more about the workshop and/or want to speak with the instructor and I will put you in touch with him.
