Intro to Fiction w/ Nick Mamatas starts this weekend in Duboce Park, San Francisco

Dear Writers,

This will sound odd, but here’s an interesting fact: it is difficult to find the right writing class.

There are many classes on exploring the idea of story, but relatively few instructional classes on creative writing.

Compare this to, say, classes on drawing and painting. In those classes, you practice techniques, and learn how to accurately depict subjects by practicing the fundamental elements of line and value, shade and color, texture, form, and space.

Even if you don’t practice all that much, you at least develop the eye to see and appreciate these elements in every two-dimensional image you’ll encounter for the rest of your life.

Intro to Fiction is like an art class.

We work through the fundamental elements of fiction: concept, point of view, dialogue, plot, and practice in class.

We also workshop stories and novel chapters every week, and in this way train the eye and the ear. You’ll never read the same way again, even if you decide to never publish your writing.

And at the end of our six weeks together, your writing will become much closer to publishable.

Six weeks of training is the equivalent of six months of trial-and-error typing.

Are you ready? Come and see! Come and see!
